Experience Mali’s magical Dogon County on Tour
and Trek with Silk Steps
Dogon County in Mali
is an area best explored on foot and one that is
typified by stunning landscapes, timeless traditions
fiercely upheld for centuries and of sandy plains and
craggy escarpments.
And now Silk Steps is
given those looking for something just a little out of
the ordinary the chance to experience this enchanting
and untouched land during a nine-day tour and trek.
Situated in the
southern part of the landlocked West African nation,
Dogon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been
home to the Dogon people for hundreds of years.
Villages are scattered along the entire length of the
200 km sandstone Bandiagara escarpment from plateau to
cliffside where communities practice a way of life
steeped in history and custom.
The trip begins in the
capital Bamako before transferring to Mopti – a city
on three islands at the confluence of the Niger and
Bani rivers and where a leisurely boat trip, shopping
in a local market or savouring the excellent offerings
of its many French patisseries is the order of the
day.
The trek itself takes
five days and typically covers distances of between 14
and 17 km a day with comfortable but basic
accommodation – and the odd night spent sleeping on
the rooftops of huts.
This is not a journey
for those who like their home comforts and seamless
travel. But for anyone with a sense of adventure and a
yearning for the untouched and unexplored the rewards
are numerous.
Silk Steps’ Dogon
Country Trek costs £2958.00 per person based on two
people travelling. The cost includes flights with Air
France to Bamako, transfers, accommodation and the
services of local, English speaking guides. The best
time to visit Mali is from October through to
February.
